Description and Responsibilities
Medical technologists perform laboratory analysis of body fluids such as blood and urine to help doctors diagnose diseases (leukemia, anemia, diabetes…) and ensure adequate patient monitoring and treatment.
To this end, they must, among other tasks, take samples, prepare them for testing and analysis. They ensure the precision and accuracy of results to allow the physicians to make an accurate diagnosis.
Medical technologists work in the following fields:
- Prélèvement;
- Biochimie;
- Hématologie et hémostase;
- Microbiologie;
- Banque de sang;
- Pathologie.
Education and Training Requirements
Biomedical laboratory technology training programs are offered in several regions in Québec.

- Must be a good communicator and listener
- Must be responsible and organized
- Must enjoy completing repetitive tasks according to established standards
- Must enjoy physical work and handling (medical) instruments
- Must have excellent initiative and be able to work autonomously
- Must have good summarizing and analytical skills

Work Environment
Medical technologists mainly work in hospitals (in French only) and local community services centres (CLSCs) (in French only).
