Description and Responsibilities

Medical records technicians process health information and manage the disclosure and protection of such information according to laws, regulations and policies in force.  

They have the skill to design and analyze biopsychosocial files to encode items based on nomenclatures. They list data in files for statistical and research purposes, and participate in the evaluation of medical and clinical actions, as well monitoring care quality. Medical records technicians also compile data from specialized registries (tumours, trauma).

They manage an institution’s information system and clinical databases by collaborating in the implementation and update of programs and providing appropriate training and support to other workers.

Work Environment

Medical records technicians work in all categories of institutions but mainly practise in hospitals (in French only) and Local community services centres (CLSCs) (in French only).
